game-of-thrones-dosAs it stands the latest season of Game of Thrones is no longer based on George R.R. Martin’s books. This is because Martin has yet to complete writing the book, but it seems like he is well on his way of doing so. In fact in a recent blog update, Martin announced that they will be publishing a sample chapter from the upcoming The Winds of Winter book.

Martin is quick to dismiss the rumors that the publishing of the sample chapter is an indication that the book is done, so try not to read too much into it. “You want to know what the Sand Snakes, Prince Doran, Areo Hotah, Ellaria Sand, Darkstar, and the rest will be up to in WINDS OF WINTER? Quite a lot, actually. The sample will give you a taste. For the rest, you will need to wait. And no, just to spike any bullshit rumors, changing the sample chapter does NOT mean I am done. See the icon up above? Monkey is still on my back… but he’s growing, he is, and one day…”

Now to be fair, the Game of Thrones TV show’s creators have taken creative liberties with Martin’s materials in the previous seasons, but for the most part it has remained true to the story, or at least the overarching theme. Season 6 is completely on its own so what you read in this sample chapter might not even be close to what the show will be about.

We know that some fans might not be too pleased about having two different versions but that’s just the way it is. If you have some time to spare, you can check out the sample chapter on Martin’s website.
