xiaomi redmi 3sIf there is one thing Xiaomi is known for, it would be its value for money phones. For the most part, Chinese OEMs like Xiaomi, Huawei, Oppo, and OnePlus have introduced phones with relatively high-end specs but yet aren’t priced the same as Samsung or Apple handsets, and this strategy has worked out great for them.

However it seems that Xiaomi could be changing their mind, or at least trying to cater to a different crowd because speaking to Gizmo China, Xiaomi’s co-founder Liwan Jiang, he confirmed that the company had plans to launch a $600 smartphone later this year. To be more specific, he said that the phone would be priced at RMB4,000 which is roughly $600 when converted.

Unfortunately apart from that revelation, not much else is known about the phone so in terms of specs, we’re not sure what it is that we can expect or why it will cost that much. After all companies like OnePlus have managed to create devices using the latest specs like the Snapdragon 820 and fitting 6GB of RAM and still sell it at an affordable price, so we’re not sure how different Xiaomi’s $600 phone will be like.

In any case we guess we will have to wait and see, but what do you guys think of Xiaomi’s decision? Is branching into Samsung and Apple’s territory a good movie for a company that has been known for being affordable?
