Without a doubt, Android and iOS are basically the two dominant smartphone operating systems in the market today, although we guess to call iOS dominant is a bit weird when you look at the market shares of both platforms. According to the latest figures by Gartner (via BGR), it shows Android is still very much so in the lead.
Based on the numbers, it revealed that Android actually increased in market share from last year. Last year’s figures for Q2 2015 showed Android owning 82.2% of the worldwide market, while iOS was at 14.6%. Fast forward to Q2 2016, Android increased its market share and went up to 86.2% and possibly at the expense of iOS, which fell to 12.9%.
Other platforms appear to have slumped as well, with Android pretty much the only platform to have seen an increase. For example Windows Phone dropped from 2.5% to 0.6%, while BlackBerry dropped from 0.3% to 0.1%, which means that both iOS and Android nearly account for the entire smartphone market.
If we had to venture a guess, we’d say that iOS will most likely continue to slip for the foreseeable future. We’ve already seen iPhones sales start to decline, and the tablet market isn’t exactly very hot right now either, but maybe that will change with 2017’s iPhone but we guess we’ll have to wait and see.
