Samsung Reportedly Manufacturing NVIDIA’s Next-Gen Graphics Processors

A new report out of Korea suggests that Samsung has bagged a big manufacturing contract from one of the leading producers of graphics processors. NVIDIA is a name that requires no introduction, best known for its graphics processors, it’s reported that the company has picked Samsung as a manufacturing partner for its next-generation graphics processors. NVIDIA has previously worked with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. for its GPUs.

The report suggests that NVIDIA has decided to shift from TSMC’s 16nm manufacturing process to Samsung’s 14nm process, enabling the company to opt for a process that’s going to further shrink the next-gen Pascal GPU’s architecture. If this happens, it would mean that both AMD and NVIDIA will be running their GPUs on the same production process.

South Korea’s Chosun Biz reported that Samsung is going to start making NVIDIA’s next-generation graphics processors using its 14nm production technology before the end of this year. The company is said to be testing the new Pascal GPU production line at one of its factories in South Korea. The report did not reveal the percentage of orders that Samsung has been given.

It merits mentioning here that none of this has been officially confirmed as yet. When contacted by Reuters, a spokeswoman for Samsung declined to comment and NVIDIA hasn’t offered one as well.
