Talk about adding fuel to the fire. There have been endless rumors about Apple working on an electric car and now a report from a reputable publication claims that Apple and British supercar maker McLaren are actually in talks for a possible acquisition. There’s really only one reason why Apple would acquire McLaren and that would be to help out with its ambitions to become a car company, it’s not like the company will start selling McLaren-branded phones now, will it?

The Financial Times reports that Apple is talking to McLaren about an acquisition or a major stake in the company, it also says that these talks have been in progress for several months now.

McLaren has a great history in the industry. Not only does it make some of the most desirable cars on the planet but it also has a great Formula One team. You might remember that it was rumored recently that Apple was interested in acquiring the entire Formula One racing league, but that’s not going to happen as someone else already has taken a majority stake in it.

The report estimates that should a deal be reached, it would value McLaren between $1.3 and $2 billion, but it does point out that it’s unclear if and when a deal will be reached between the two companies. Apple and McLaren haven’t commented on this report as yet.
