nintendo-wii-u-review-9Many are wondering what Nintendo has planned for the Wii U once the Nintendo NX is released. After all why would gamers bother with an older console when a newer and potentially better console is available, right? That being said, it seems that Nintendo could be getting ready to slowly phase the Wii U out.

According to a report from online retailer GameSeek (via Nintendo Life), they have learnt that Nintendo is apparently taking the final orders for the Wii U from retailers, which means that after this batch of orders is taken, there will be no more future orders, suggesting that the Wii U’s production could be halted. We’re not sure if this only applies to retailers in the UK, or if it is applicable to the rest of the world.

Given that we recently heard that Nintendo had already begun the trial production of the NX, it makes sense that they might want to focus their resources on it rather than the Wii U, which by all accounts isn’t selling as well as they had expected. At the same time, this report also goes against another report from earlier this year in which Nintendo denied that they’ll be ending the Wii U’s production.

It is possible that things could have changed from then and now, but Nintendo had stated that they don’t think that the NX is a pure successor to the Wii U, kind of like how the 3DS and the Wii U aren’t necessarily competing products, and given that we’ve heard that the NX is kind of like a handheld hybrid, perhaps there could still be space for the Wii U to exist. In any case we guess only Nintendo knows what’s up so take it with a grain of salt for now.
