Periscope Streaming Expands Beyond Smartphones

Periscope streaming is no longer confined to just smartphones. Twitter’s live streaming service has confirmed today that it’s going beyond smartphones. Periscope will now be able to stream video from just about anything. It has announced the launch of a new feature called Producer which is meant for those who want to use devices other than smartphones to stream live video.

Users will soon be able to send their live streams to Periscope servers regardless of whether it comes from a drone, connected camera, tablet or smartphone. They will be displayed on their accounts in the same fashion as streams initiated from the smartphone app. Images being streamed to a URL can be hosted on Periscope as well.

It’s true that most people will only be interested in initiating live streams from their smartphones because that’s what they’re bound to have on them at any given time. Periscope is aware of the fact that this new feature is only going to be used by “a very small subset of users,” and it’s okay with that because it helps expand the reach of its platform and that’s all that matters in the end.

Periscope says that the Producer feature will be rolled out very slowly in the coming weeks. Those who are interested in using this feature will have to fill a questionnaire so that they are whitelisted and the feature goes live for them. Periscope is yet to confirm when this feature will be rolled out to all users.
