Galaxy S8’s AI Assistant Could Be Called ‘Bixby’

samsung-logoEver since Samsung announced that they will be acquiring Viv Labs, a company started by Siri’s founders, many wondered what would become of the technology. Unsurprisingly the rumors surfaced which suggested that it could be integrated into the Galaxy S8 and live on as a improved virtual assistant, at least compared to S Voice.

Now thanks to a recent trademark registration discovered by Kipris (via PhoneArena), a potential name for the upcoming AI assistant has been revealed to be called “Bixby”. The description of the trademark includes, “computer software for personal information management, computer application software for smartphones, mobile telephones, portable computers and tablet computers, namely, software used to operate voice recognition system… computer software for enabling hands-free use of a mobile phone through voice recognition.”

Granted Bixby could really be for just about anything, the description of the trademark does mention a few things that hints at its voice assistant capabilities. Unfortunately we have no idea how well Bixby will perform, but assuming it is Viv Labs’ AI, Google and Apple could be looking at some serious competition here.

So far S Voice hasn’t really gained that much traction so it will be interesting to see if this new voice assistant will work out for Samsung. Either way we’ll have to wait until 2017 to find out if the rumors are true.
