WhatsApp To Continue Support BBOS & BlackBerry 10 Until June 30 2017

whatsapp-logo-newAt the moment iOS and Android are the dominant mobile platforms. A few years ago the market was different and we would see more variety in terms of operating system, like BBOS and BlackBerry, which is why back in the day, developers would actually have more platforms to develop their apps for.

However given that BBOS and BlackBerry 10 aren’t exactly active right now, it made sense that WhatsApp would discontinue support for both platforms. In fact support was supposed to last until the end of 2016, but that has changed. In WhatsApp’s FAQ section, it seems that they will be extending support to both platforms until June 30, 2017.

In the FAQ section, the developer revealed that BBOS, BlackBerry 10, Nokia S40, and Nokia Symbian S60 will be supported until June 30, 2017. However older platforms like Android 2,1 Android 2.2, Windows Phone 7, and iOS devices running iOS 6 or below will no longer be supported beginning of next year.

According to WhatsApp, “These platforms don’t offer the kind of capabilities we need to expand our app’s features in the future. If you use one of these affected mobile devices, we recommend upgrading to a newer Android running OS 2.3+, a Windows Phone 8+, or an iPhone running iOS 7+ before the end of 2016 to continue using WhatsApp.”
