A couple of days ago, the trailer for The Last of Us Part 2 was revealed. It showed us a grown up Ellie strumming a guitar and at the end when Joel walks in, she says she plans to kill “every last one of them”, even though she does not mention any specifics, but we guess that’s kind of the plot of the game, right?

Unfortunately as The Last of Us Part 2 is still in the early stages of development, exactly how the game plays out remains to be seen, but it has not stopped fans from speculating, with the latest speculation that is bound to blow some minds. According to a post on Reddit, fans are speculating that Joel is actually dead, and that Ellie is seeing him as some kind of coping mechanism.

One of the main reasonings is that despite Ellie being grown up, Joel doesn’t seem to have aged. Also the fact that we do not see Joel’s face seems to suggest that he could be dead, and what better motivation for revenge than the death of her mentor/guardian, right? This could also be one of the reasons why Ellie will be the main playable character in the game, where in the previous game we mostly controlled Joel.

Of course all of this is just speculation for now and it’s really too early to say anything, but what do you guys think? Does this theory have merit? If you want to rewatch the trailer through new eyes, you can check it out above.
