The recently-released Microsoft Xbox One X represents a refresh in the current console lineup, and is essentially Microsoft’s answer to the Sony PS4 Pro. However the console is also more expensive than the PS4 Pro or any other console that’s available on the market right now, so the question is, is it worth it?
The folks at Digital Foundry attempt to find that out by comparing the graphics of both consoles using Sledgehammer’s recently-released Call of Duty: WWII, which you can check out for yourself in the video above. Now for those unfamiliar with either console, they were both created to help facilitate 4K gaming, but they both pack different specs.
On paper the Xbox One X is more powerful, with a processor whose clock speed is marginally higher than that of the PS4 Pro. However in the graphics department, this is where the Xbox One X has the lead with more TFLOPS and also more memory with 12GB of GDDR5 RAM versus the PS4 Pro’s 8GB of GDDR5 RAM.
So how does this translate in Call of Duty: WWII? Based on their first-look which is based on the campaign, it seems that the main difference would be the clarity of images, where they found that the Xbox One X was capable of rendering more pixels more of the time, although given the fast-paced nature of the game, we’re not sure if this is something that players will notice.
They also found that the game relied on dynamic resolution scaling, and that for the most part the Xbox One X was capable of hitting the higher-end of the resolution. Note that for multiplayer it could be a very different story, so what you see now might not necessarily reflect how the game looks in multiplayer.
However at the end of the day despite the Xbox One X appearing to perform better in certain aspects, overall it seems that the differences don’t feel too obvious, but feel free to judge for yourself by checking out the video above.
