By all accounts the Nintendo Switch has proven to be a success and a win for the company. Just last month Nintendo announced that they have managed to sell a little under 8 million units of the Switch, and it seems that the company also expects that within a year, they should be able to surpass the Wii U’s lifetime sales.

For those unfamiliar, the Wii U is the Switch’s predecessor and we suppose you could call it a flop and despite it being on the market for only five years, it has since been discontinued, but the failure of the console was not for naught. In a report from CNN Tech, Nintendo has credited the Wii U’s failure for the Switch’s success, claiming that they have learnt a lot from that failure which they have since addressed with the Switch.

One of those problems was a lack of games, or at least a lack of consistency in the releases of Wii U titles. Speaking to CNN Tech, Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime said, “We’ve addressed that with the Nintendo Switch — having a steady pace of new launches is critical.” He also added that the Switch has the support of big name publishers as well as indie developers, something that was lacking with the Wii U.

“Whether it’s the big companies like Electronic Arts, or whether it’s the smaller independent developer, we need those companies to create content to support us. We have that now with Nintendo Switch.” Indeed we have seen quite a few big titles arrive for the Switch, as well as support from publishers like EA and Bethesda, while others such as Square Enix have expressed their desire to support the platform.
