Tesla’s Self-Driving Technology Is Already As Good As Humans, Musk Says

Tesla’s Autopilot suite of semi-autonomous driving features are some of the best available on the market right now. The company’s CEO believes that the Autopilot hardware in its current form makes the technology as good as a human driver as far as full self-driving autonomy is concerned. However, it can’t be put into practical use at this point in time given that regulators haven’t signed off on Level 5 autonomy for public use just yet.

Speaking during the company’s third-quarter earnings result earlier this week, Musk said that Tesla’s Autopilot system should already be as good at driving as a human driver.

Regulators don’t allow full autonomy as yet, though. “Regulators may require some significant margin above human capability in order for a full autonomy to be engaged,” Musk said.

He added that “they may say it needs to be 50 percent safer, 100 percent safer, 1000 percent safer, I don’t know. I’m not sure they know either … I’m confident that we can get to approximately human level with our current hardware.”

Musk also confirmed that Tesla is going to have more to say on the Autopilot hardware soon. The company doesn’t have any announcements regarding this that it’s going to make immediately but Musk is optimistic on the hardware front. It seems like we’re going to hear more about Tesla’s plans for Autopilot in the coming months.
