Maven is the car sharing platform that General Motors launched back in January 2016. The service has its own fleet of GM cars which customers can rent for short periods of time as need be. GM is switching things up a bit as it’s now allowing owners of GM-branded vehicles in select areas to make money by sharing their own cars through the platform.

This peer-to-peer car sharing service has been launched under GM’s Maven brand. Those who own or lease a 2015 or newer GM car can list their vehicle on the Maven peer-to-peer car share app.

Once their listing is approved, the cars can then be rented out for some extra cash. Owners or lessees who rent their vehicles through the platform will get 60 percent of the revenue while GM will keep the rest. The insurance for the vehicles being rented out will be covered by GM.

“If you want to have access to a car, you have access to a car. So I believe this is just expanding our opportunity to provide consumers what they want,” said Julia Steyn, vice president, General Motors urban mobility and Maven.

GM has branded this service as Peer Cars and it’s available to all existing Maven members. GM is testing this new service in Chicago, Detroit and Ann Arbor, Michigan. It may decide to launch Peer Cars in other cities across the country later.
