Amazon has made a name for itself with original content for its streaming service but it appears that the company has a plan of owning actual movie theaters. A new report today claims that the company is mulling the possibility of purchasing Landmark Theatres, a movie theater chain with more than 50 locations.

Bloomberg hears from sources that Amazon is interesting in acquiring Landmark Theatres. It’s believed to be one of the companies looking to acquire the chain. The movie theater chain largely shows foreign and independent films at its over 50 locations.

It mentions that the theater chain’s owners have been working with investment banker Stephens Inc. to work out a possible sale of the business. No final decisions have been made as yet and the talks could fall through at any stage. Netflix thought about acquiring it as well but reportedly dropped the idea in April as executives felt the price was too high.

Amazon hasn’t said anything about this deal but it wouldn’t surprise anyone if it does decide to go ahead with the acquisition. It has been investing heavily in its original content endeavors recently as it seeks to compete more effectively against the behemoth that is Netflix.

Some reports have even suggested that Amazon wants to bring in more people for its Prime membership programs and it might produce big movies for this purpose. Having its own chain of movie theatres will certainly help the company achieve that objective.
