Last week Nintendo unveiled new NES controllers designed for the Nintendo Switch. Now if you were thinking about getting your hands on them, you might want to take note of a caveat and that is apparently these controllers will only work with NES games. This was discovered in a disclaimer on Nintendo’s UK and Australian website.

The disclaimer reads, “Please note: Nintendo Entertainment System Controllers can only be used while detached from the Nintendo Switch system, and only to play NES – Nintendo Switch Online games.” For those unfamiliar, the Switch will have access to classic emulated NES games as part of the subscription to the Switch Online service.

Given that these NES controllers are exclusive to those with a Switch Online subscription, we guess we can’t say we’re surprised, although it makes a lot more sense now. It is unclear why Nintendo is limiting their functionality since we’re sure that there are probably many gamers who wouldn’t mind using it for regular games.

Nintendo had also previously pointed out that these are not meant to be used as Joy-Con alternatives either. We’re not sure if there are plans for this to change in the future, but it is a bit of disappointing news, but you should probably take note of it in case you plan on getting it anyway.
