It was reported by The New York Times yesterday that President Trump is still using his personal iPhone which isn’t secured up to the standard that you would expect for the President of the United States. The report mentioned that China and Russia are taking advantage of this and listening in on his calls. China has rubbished the report and made a tongue-in-cheek suggestion that if the iPhone can’t keep Trump’s calls safe then maybe he should switch to Huawei.

Huawei is a massive manufacturer based in China. It has long been accused, particularly by multiple federal bodies in the United States, that its products may enable the Chinese intelligence to spy on users. Huawei’s network equipment has also been banned in the United States. Hence the tongue-in-cheek comment recommending Trump switch to a Huawei.

Hua Chunying from the Chinese foreign ministry’s information department has said that “If they are very worried about iPhones being tapped, they can use Huawei,” further adding that the report by the New York Times is fake news.

The administration doesn’t really want the public at large to use Huawei phones so it’s next to impossible that one would be cleared for use by the president. Federal agencies such as the FBI and the CIA have even warned customers against using Huawei’s products. There has been no official response to China’s claim so far.
