Federal workers in the United States have been having a tough time due to the longest government shutdown in the country’s history. People and organizations have been stepping up to help out the thousands of workers who have been left without paychecks. GoFundMe has set up a fundraiser to collect donations for these workers. The funds will be distributed among different nonprofit organizations that are on the ground helping some 800,000 affected workers.

GoFundMe CEO Rob Solomon announced the launch of this fundraiser. Deepak Chopra got the ball rolling with a $10,000 donation and GoFundMe matched that with $10,000 of its own. More than $93,000 have been raised by this fundraiser so far with contributions coming in from some 1,100 people.

Donations received by the fundraiser will be distributed to nonprofit organizations such as The World Central Kitchen in Washington DC that’s providing free meals to workers. GoFundMe says that it’s going to give the funds to nonprofits which are providing food, counseling, and housing assistance. It’s going to release the full list of organizations that the funds will be given to in the coming days. The company wants other nonprofits that are currently working on their own to help the furloughed workers to reach out.
