Slightly Mad Studios, best known for its popular racing simulator Project Cars, has teased the development of a new console. Not just any console, mind you, CEO of Slightly Mad Studios Ian Bell says that the company is working on “the most powerful console ever built.” It will apparently be called the Mad Box.

Bell only offered a few details about the console in his tweet. The Mad Box will have 4K and virtual reality support at 60 frames per second “per eye,” which means 120 fps. The company may even provide developers with a full engine for free to develop their games on.

Speaking to Variety, Bell mentioned that the company expects to ship its console in about three years. It’s too soon to say at this point in time what the specs might look like then but Bell says that the specs of this console will be “equivalent to a very fast PC two years from now.”

No further information has been provided about the free development engine which would let developers make games for the Mad Box and other platforms. The company may be hoping that its cross-platform game development engine encourages developers to bring their games to its console.

It remains to be seen, though, if the studio will be able to deliver on these claims three years from now. The more skeptical among us might call these tall claims slightly mad (pun intended).
