While storage size on smartphones is important, given that our media files seem to be getting bigger, the speed of these storage solutions also matters. This is because the read and write speeds on these storage solutions determines how fast files are accessed, and how fast files are saved to the device.

The good news is that for future Samsung handset owners is that the company has announced plans to begin mass production of the first 512GB eUFS 3.0 flash storage chip. According to Samsung, they are boasting that this new storage solution will be twice as fast compared to its predecessor, although whether or not these speeds can be felt in the real world remains to be seen.

According to Cheol Choi, executive vice president of Memory Sales & Marketing at Samsung Electronics, “Beginning mass production of our eUFS 3.0 lineup gives us a great advantage in the next-generation mobile market to which we are bringing a memory read speed that was before only available on ultra-slim laptops. As we expand our eUFS 3.0 offerings, including a 1-Terabyte (TB) version later this year, we expect to play a major role in accelerating momentum within the premium mobile market.”

The new chip will be launching this month and it is expected to find its way into devices like the Galaxy Fold, but it is unclear if it could find its way into the Galaxy S10 as well. There is a chance that it could as according to a report from yesterday, some configurations of the Galaxy S10 will ship later than others, suggesting that it could be due to these new chips.
