With Blizzard’s newer games such as Heroes of the Storm and Overwatch, the company has introduced loot boxes which has been a way for the company to earn more money during the lifetime of the game. However according to a report from Rock Paper Shotgun, it seems that the company will be stepping back from paid loot boxes in Heroes of the Storm.

This is based on the latest patch notes where Blizzard notes that loot boxes will no longer be able to be purchased using Gems. For those unfamiliar, Gems were the only way to purchase loot boxes in the game, and were only obtainable using real-life money. Instead Blizzard has announced that loot boxes can only be purchased using Gold where they will be priced at 3,000 Gold pieces each.

Gold, for those who don’t play the game, can be earned through playing the game, so players will be able to save and earn their gold pieces to get a loot box. Granted some might actually prefer using real-life money since it saves time, but there has been some controversy surrounding loot boxes in the past, so it seems that Blizzard is trying to reduce the fallout.

Note that Gems can still be purchased but they can now only be used towards unlocking heroes that you want to play, so they still have use for it. In the meantime Blizzard had announced back in 2018 that they would be scaling back development on Heroes of the Storm.
