Game of Thrones fans have very patiently been waiting for season 8 which is the final season of this super hit series. HBO finally premiered the first episode of the new season on Sunday and as expected, the season 8 premiere has broken the viewership record which was set by the previous season.

HBO has released the audience stats for the Game of Thrones season 8 premiere. The network confirms that the premiere drew in a record 17.4 million viewers on Sunday night. That’s quite a bit more than the 16.1 million viewers that watched the season 7 premiere and the 16.9 million people that watched the finale.

This isn’t going to surprise anyone. Game of Thrones is HBO’s marquee show, one that was highly anticipated by millions of people across the globe. The show has followed this trend over the years, with each new season pulling in a lot more viewers than the last.

HBO has set the tone nicely for the remaining episodes with the season premiere. The trailers that it has previously released show that there’s going to be no shortage of action in the last season of Game of Thrones. As this is the shortest season in the series, fans will find out who really does win this game of thrones in just a matter of weeks.
