Opening the emergency exit once the plane’s doors have been armed will result in the safety shute being deployed. That’s precisely what happened on a flight from Manchester last week. A woman opened the emergency exit by mistake, thinking that it was the door to the toilet, and that resulted in a delay of over eight hours for the flight.

Once the doors are armed on a plane, the evacuation slide will deploy automatically when the door is opened. Fortunately, the woman had opened the door while the plane was still on the tarmac.

The Pakistan International Airlines’ flight PK702 was on-time for its departure to Islamabad when the woman decided to use the toilet even though the seatbelts signed had been turned on. She opened the L5 door at the back of the aircraft while the toilet door was adjacent to it.

“A passenger erroneously opened the emergency door causing the emergency slide to activate,” the airline confirmed in a statement. Once the evacuation slide had been deployed, it was no longer possible to operate the flight. The departure had to be called off and the flight was delayed for more than eight hours. All passengers were taken off the plane.
