Amazon might be looking to compete in the online food delivery market in India. A new report claims that Amazon is planning a move into the online food delivery business in the country. This market is already quite crowded in India and the arrival of Amazon into the mix is only going to heat up the competition further. It may also be an opportunity for some homegrown services to seek an exit by way of a merger/acquisition.

Citing two sources familiar with the development, Reuters reports that Amazon is working with a local partner for this service and has started hiring staff for this new service. Amazon may not wait long to launch this service.

It apparently wants the service to be up and running ahead of the month-long festive season in India which begins in September. Amazon may be looking to compete in the online food delivery business in other markets after shutting down its food delivery operations in the United States last month due to strong competition.

There are quite a few competitors in this market already. Uber also launched its food delivery service in the country two years ago but hasn’t been able to grow at the same pace as the local market leaders. A local report has even suggested that Amazon may be in talks to acquire Uber Eats but this hasn’t been verified by Reuters.
