Given that J.R.R. Tolkien did such a fantastic job at creating the world that the Lord of the Rings story takes place in, it made sense when it was announced by Amazon that in addition to the TV series that they were developing based on it, that they were also working on an MMORPG based on Lord of the Rings.

Unfortunately, it seems that the company has decided that they will no longer be pursuing development of the latter. This was confirmed by an Amazon spokesperson who told Bloomberg that this was due to Amazon being unable to secure the necessary terms to launch the game. The spokesperson said that Amazon was “unable to secure terms to proceed with this title at this time. We love the Lord of the Rings IP, and are disappointed that we won’t be bringing this game to customers.”

For those wondering about this dispute, it stems from Tencent’s acquisition of Leyou back in December, Leyou was the developer that was working alongside Amazon on the game, but since the acquisition, it led to a contract dispute between Amazon and Tencent which has now led to the game being cancelled.

It is a bit of a pity since it has been about two years since the game was first announced and we’re sure that many fans have been eagerly anticipating it. It is also a blow to Amazon’s gaming efforts which was launched back in 2014.
