Motorola Wants To Bring OTA Wireless Charging To Its Smartphones

Earlier this year, a video surfaced which seemed to show Motorola showing off its wireless charging technology. While wireless charging isn’t new, what made this particularly exciting was how it could charge devices without needing for it to be one a wireless charging mat, making it “true” wireless charging.

We haven’t really heard much from the company since then, but Motorola has recently announced that they will be working with GuRu Wireless to help create the first OTA wireless charging technology that they hope to bring to its smartphones. For those unfamiliar, the concept of OTA wireless charging has been around for a while, but we haven’t really seen it being used for commercial devices.

Assuming Motorola and GuRu Wireless are successful, it could be a huge deal. However, Motorola’s phones aren’t exactly very popular these days compared to the competition. We have to wonder if they might simply be better off just selling or licensing the tech to other smartphone makers, or maybe the inclusion of this tech could help drive sales, either way, we won’t know until much later.

There is currently no word on when we will be able to see devices that leverage this OTA wireless technology, but we have heard and seen that other companies such as Xiaomi and Oppo are working on similar tech as well.
