Apple Is Researching True Wireless Charging Technology

Today’s wireless charging technology usually involves the need for some kind of base whether it be a magnetic puck like Apple’s MagSafe, or a wireless charging mat or surface. However, none of these are truly wireless as they will still need to be tethered for it to work, but Apple is apparently looking to change that.

A report from Bloomberg has revealed that Apple continues to research true wireless charging technology that would allow devices to charge completely free of cables or mats over a short distance. This technology isn’t as wild as you think it is because we have seen it demonstrated in the past.

In fact, companies like Motorola, Xiaomi, and Oppo have shown off working concepts that charge devices without the need for some kind of wireless charging mat. Also, as some of you might recall, years ago there were rumors that Apple could be working on such technology, but it never quite panned out, so we can’t say we’re surprised to hear about it once again.

Apple did attempt to revolutionize wireless charging tech with the AirPower, but due to various technical issues, the project was eventually cancelled. The report does not mention when exactly Apple’s true wireless charging tech will make its debut, so don’t hold your breath.
