When Instagram first launched, it was a platform for people to share their photos, kind of like a more social version of other platforms like Flickr. However, over the years Instagram has grown and evolved to being more than just a photo sharing platform. It has become some kind of hybrid.
That being said, it doesn’t really come as a surprise to learn that Instagram will actually be shifting their focus more towards videos. In a post on Twitter by Instagram head Adam Mosseri, he revealed that for 2022, the company will be doubling down on their video efforts with features like Reels.
2022 Priorities 📝
This next year is going to be pivotal for Instagram. In addition to our industry-leading safety and wellbeing efforts, we’re focused on these four key priorities.
Hope you’re all able to get some rest over the holidays. See you in the New Year! ✌🏼 pic.twitter.com/iY8uQ1EnMZ

Video isn’t new to Instagram and the company has allowed users to post videos on their feed, Stories, and through IGTV. Reels is the company’s latest addition and was designed to help them compete against other platforms like TikTok, which has been exploding in popularity over the past couple of years.
We imagine that this could be one of the reasons why Instagram has chosen to focus more on its video efforts moving into 2022, so it will be interesting to see what kind of new features the company could launch to make themselves more competitive.
In addition to focusing on videos, Mosseri also stated that it plans to target its messaging service in 2022, where they’re hoping that more people can connect with each other through it.
