Many, many years ago, Google offered users the ability to use a custom domain that would be linked up to various Google products or services. For example, instead of using Gmail.com as your email, you could use a custom domain but continue to use Gmail as your interface and platform of choice.
In fact, it was actually offered for free to users who did not want to pay for extras (you’d have to pay for your own custom domain, though). Google later ended that offer but for those who were grandfathered in, they could continue to use that service without any issue, at least until now where the company has announced that they will be killing off its legacy G Suite accounts.
According to an announcement by the company, they state that all G Suite legacy free edition subscriptions will now need to upgrade to a paid Google Workspace subscription. This will come into effect on the 1st of May, 2022 and for those that do not respond by then, Google states that they will “suspend” those accounts for 60 days, meaning that you get to access your account but some features may no longer be available until you start paying for the new subscription..
Based on the current subscription, it will cost users $6 a month for a Business Starter plan that comes with 30GB of storage, or $8 a month for a personal plan. More information on these changes can be found on Google’s support page.
