CMF is officially separating from Nothing to establish itself as an independent smartphone company headquartered in India. The strategic spin-off was announced by Carl Pei, CEO and founder of both brands, via X (formerly Twitter). 
Under this new corporate framework, the organization will feature majority Indian ownership, dedicated leadership personnel, and localized research and development operations based directly in the country.
Despite the operational independence, Nothing will remain a key shareholder and technological partner. Both entities will continue collaborating closely by sharing operating system software, proprietary technologies, engineering expertise, and established supply-chain networks. Pei noted that the transition enables CMF to evolve beyond being a sub-brand managed by a British company, granting the regional division direct autonomy over essential engineering processes.

According to Pei, establishing true manufacturing self-reliance requires local engineering teams to oversee core technical domains. These focus areas include device chassis architecture, camera systems, software optimization, and antenna design, rather than relying strictly on assembly-line labor.
India represents a strategic operational base for this initiative. Approximately 99% of smartphones distributed within the country are assembled locally, catering to an annual domestic consumer market exceeding 150 million units. Furthermore, the region provides extensive access to specialized software engineering talent and hardware development infrastructure.
Market performance data contributed significantly to the separation. CMF recorded the highest expansion rate among smartphone sub-brands in India throughout 2025, providing strong momentum for structural autonomy. The long-term commercial objective is to scale shipments to 100 million smartphones annually, a milestone intended to secure broader supply-chain leverage and competitive pricing in the budget-to-midrange market.
CMF has not yet disclosed the full timeline for its corporate reorganization, executive appointments, or when the Indian administrative framework will achieve complete operational independence.
