Lenovo is expanding its ThinkBook 14 Gen 9 lineup with a new Snapdragon X2 Plus configuration, bringing Qualcomm’s latest processor and a powerful 80-TOPS NPU to its mainstream 14-inch business laptop.
This is not an entirely new ThinkBook generation. During my briefing with Lenovo, the company clarified that Intel and AMD versions of the ThinkBook Gen 9 already exist, while this new model adds Qualcomm to the family. It is also Lenovo’s first 14-inch ThinkBook Gen 9 with Snapdragon; Qualcomm was previously available in a larger ThinkBook configuration.
The new Snapdragon X2 Plus is a powerful processor for a thin-and-light laptop. Qualcomm offers the platform with up to 10 third-generation Oryon CPU cores, while its Hexagon NPU delivers 80 TOPS of dedicated AI acceleration.
That 80-TOPS figure is particularly notable. Intel’s current Core Ultra Series 3 processors top out at 50 NPU TOPS, while AMD’s Ryzen AI 400 family reaches 60 TOPS. On paper, Snapdragon X2 Plus therefore provides significantly more dedicated NPU acceleration than the current mainstream Intel and AMD alternatives.
However, that doesn’t make the ThinkBook 14 Gen 9 a dedicated AI workstation.
Its NPU is designed primarily to accelerate AI features integrated into everyday PC applications: meeting tools, image and video processing, content generation, Copilot+ features, and increasingly, AI agents running locally. Heavy local AI development and large-model inference can depend much more heavily on GPU performance, memory capacity, and memory bandwidth.
Lenovo’s own positioning reflects that distinction. The ThinkBook 14 Gen 9 is aimed at AI-assisted productivity, content creation and multitasking, rather than developers running very large AI models locally.
The laptop features a 14-inch WUXGA display rated at 400 nits, with touch available as an option. It measures 17.7mm thick and starts at 1.3kg (2.87 pounds).
Lenovo also claims up to 26 hours of local video playback, although, as always, that number comes from controlled internal testing and should not be confused with 26 hours of normal mixed use.
AI features include Microsoft’s Copilot+ experiences alongside Lenovo Qira. Lenovo highlights features such as Pay Attention, designed to help users stay focused during meetings, and Catch Me Up, which can summarize conversations or information they have missed.
Competition is increasingly strong in this category. Intel’s latest Core Ultra Series 3 laptops emphasize stronger integrated graphics and x86 software compatibility, while AMD Ryzen AI 400 combines a 60-TOPS NPU with Radeon integrated graphics. Apple’s 13-inch MacBook Air with M5 starts at $1,099 and also places increased emphasis on local AI workloads.
The Snapdragon model’s strongest arguments are therefore likely to be AI acceleration and efficiency, rather than being the fastest laptop across every workload.
The Lenovo ThinkBook 14 Gen 9 will be available in October 2026, with an expected starting price of $1,299.
