inXtron has just launched its Orbit USB 3.0 hard drive enclosure that was specially built to hold a couple of 2.5″ hard drives, where it was developed in close partnership with Gigabyte who themselves already have a whole host of USB 3.0 implementations to date. These drives can be specially configured to run in RAID configurations 0 and 1, inclusive of JBOD if you want. RAID 1 mirroring is perfect if you want to use this to handle drive failures for critical data, but that peace of mind comes at a cost – we’re talking about using double the amount of time since it will need to duplicate the data across disks. No word on pricing or availability, but in RAID 0 configuration, it will be able to make full use of the USB 3.0 bandwidth, hopefully resulting in increased productivity on your side.
