Hitachi’s subsidiary, Hitachi Displays, has announced that it has developed a new LCD display for smartphones which features quality that reaches the “limit of what is discernible to the human”, which sounds really familiar (hello Retina Display?) Specifications of this display aren’t too shabby, as it features a 720 x 1,280 pixel resolution on a 4.5-inch IPS LCD display, a significant jump over the iPhone 4’s 960 x 640 pixel Retina Display. Hitachi is currently planning to mass-produce this display from October this year, and the company is expecting cell phone manufacturers to use it for touchscreen and 3D-enabled devices. Specifications of this display include:

  • 4.5-inch IPS LCD (16:9)
  • 720 x 1,280 resolution
  • 329ppi pixel density
  • LED backlight
  • 500cd/m2 brightness
  • 1,100:1 contrast ratio
