20% of Americans use the internet on their phones while driving

Using the phone while drivingIf driving and talking on the phone or texting wasn’t bad enough, it looks like American drivers have got another danger to worry about – drivers who log on to social networks while driving. According to a survey by US insurance company, State Farm – one in five Americans that own a smartphone admits to using the internet while driving. And one of the most popular reasons these folks log on to the internet is to check out their social networks. Other reasons cited were looking for directions, reading email or searching on topics of immediate interests. Fortunately most of these activities occur during red lights or when drivers are caught in jams. A long time ago, cellphones were only capable of making and receiving calls and could only display 2 lines of text. Now we have internet-capable, large full-color touchscreens phones that can receive email to make our lives easier and to keep us connected. Is the increased functionality of our phones worth the distractions they cause while on the road? Give us your opinions in the comments below.
