I suppose that Taiwanese phone manufacturer HTC figured out that they want to be on the cutting edge of things, which is why they are working on the HTC Edge – the first quad-core phone from the company, which will most probably also be the first when it rolls out. I wonder how much of a hit the battery will take with all those cores, and will software developers actually work on an app that will take advantage of those cores? Folks who are looking out for a big screen experience will fall in love with the 4.7″ display on the HTC Edge, but it might be rather hefty as it measures more than 10mm thick.

Other rumored hardware specifications comprise of 720p resolution, 1GB RAM, a backlit 8-megapixel camera with 28-millimeter, f/2.2 lens, a supposed AP30 Tegra 3 CPU from NVIDIA which is said to come with a quartet of 1.5GHz cores. Do expect the internal storage capacity to double up to 32GB, and see the Bluetooth version being nudged upwards to touch version 4.0. In order to take advantage of their partnership with Beats Audio, expect similar enhancements to be part and parcel of the package as well.

One question remains – will LTE connectivity be introduced alongside the HTC Edge? It would be a shame if it didn’t, or perhaps there will be carrier-specific variants. The general consensus is this – the HTC Edge is tipped to arrive before the third quarter of 2012.
