It was more than a week ago when when we brought you word that the Pope has set up his Twitter account, and is all set to address the masses via his handle, @pontifex. Well, the time has come, and after a simple tap on an iPad at his weekly public audience in the Vatican, Pope Benedict XVI, has sent his first official tweet from @pontifex, to close to a million of his followers on Twitter in English. His first English tweet reads, “Dear friends, I am pleased to get in touch with you through Twitter. Thank you for your generous response. I bless all of you from my heart.”

The tweet made history when it was sent at 2:00 a.m. ET, and so far, it has seen a massive number of retweets – we are talking about more than 30,000 times. @pontifiex has since sent several additional tweets, where each of them is in a different language, all thanks to his different language accounts that number eight in total. Well, spreading the word is part of the Pope’s job, and with the help of Twitter, he would be more efficient at getting the job done in the cyberspace arena.
