We’ve all heard about the dangers and the horror stories about making friends on the internet, and while most of us exercise due caution especially when it comes to sharing sensitive information and meeting up in person, not everyone is so fortunate as is the case with a 13-year old boy from the city of Karachi, Pakistan. The boy was the victim of kidnap whereby the kidnappers posed as an online gaming friend who then persuaded the boy to meet up. They then kidnapped the boy and held him for ransom and demanded $500,000.
The good news is that the boy was successfully rescue as the police used mobile phone records to track the kidnappers. Naturally the boy’s mom was relieved to get her son back, and made a plea to parents to supervise their kids especially when using social media. She was quoted as saying, “This is my request to all the parents to never let their children make friendship on Facebook. I beg you for God’s sake that you never do.”
