Nokia Smartwatch May Be In The Works

For several months now, we’ve been hearing a number of consumer electronics companies have been toying with the idea of offering a smartwatch, with Samsung the only big-name company to actually release a product, the Galaxy Gear. It looks like yet another company might be considering throwing their hat into the smartwatch ring as patents from Nokia hint they might be cooking something up.

An application published by the Patent and Trademark Office describes a modular watch that allows the user to customize it in a number of ways. The patent says each segment of the watch would have a display that has been customized to a specific function, which can be accessed simply by turning the watch around. One of the more interesting portions of the application is how Nokia’s smartwatch looks like it’ll use a Windows Phone-style lock screen. Considering the partnership between Nokia and Microsoft, we wouldn’t be surprised if a new form of Windows was being considered for the device.

At this point, we’ve lost count on how many consumer electronics companies have allegedly started working on a smartwatch. Let’s just hope the experience improves on the first steps Samsung has made with its Galaxy Gear.
