Microsoft ‘Less Excited’ About Nokia’s Android Ambitions

Over the past few years Nokia has become synonymous with Windows Phone smartphones, it is Microsoft’s largest WP OEM that has played a major part in driving growth for Redmond’s mobile operating system. The company’s devices and services division is now set to be acquired by Microsoft for $7.17 billion, though that deal hasn’t been closed just yet. As it continues to function independently for now, there have been many rumors recently about Nokia launching an Android phone. When asked how Microsoft felt about that, Windows Phone VP Joe Belfiore said “Some things we’re excited about, some things we’re less excited about.”

This response drew some chuckles from the crowd at Microsoft’s press and analyst event ahead of Mobile World Congress 2014 in Barcelona. Nokia is expected to launch its Android phone, apparently called Nokia X, at this event. There have been so many rumors and leaks related to this phone that its more or less known for sure that the Nokia X is due to be unveiled at MWC 2014. Belfiore added that “Whatever they do, we’re very supportive of them,” hinting that there’s no pressure from Microsoft even as its on the verge of gobbling up its entire devices and services division. Once the acquisition is complete though, one can’t imagine that the division will still be churning out Android phones, so enjoy it while you can, Nokia.
