virus-shieldIf you need any further proof that there is no such thing as a 100% foolproof plan, then look no further than the Virus Shield app. We all know how security plays an extremely important role when it comes to technology, and folks have taken to Virus Shield seriously, so much so that the app itself from Deviant Solutions has ended up as the top paid app on the Play Store. The thing is, Virus Shield happens to be a scam!

Virus Shield claims that it is an antivirus which will protect “you and your personal information from harmful viruses, malware, and spyware”, not to mention “Improve the speed of your phone,” where a single magical click (or touch) is all that is required from you. Apart from that, Virus Shield claims that it will impact your battery in a minimal manner, running in the background seamlessly.

Not only that, it touts the ability to block ads, now how about that? Costing $3.99, this app has been on the Play Store for less than a fortnight, having picked up 10,000 downloads and a 4.5 star review from 1,700 people. with 2,607 people actually having hit the Google “Recommend” button. Too bad the folks at Android Police discovered that the app changes a red “X” graphic to a red “check” graphic, and just that. There is no protection or scanning involved. Google has already removed this app from the App Store just in case you were wondering. The source code can be found here.
