Apple Reportedly Testing ARM-Powered Macs [Rumor]

macbook_air_2013_3-800x270Apple’s range of MacBook computers are currently powered by an Intel chipset. However with the increase in performance by ARM-based chipsets, there have been talks that Apple could be considering making the shift over to ARM, which means that in the future we could be looking at ARM-powered MacBooks.

We have heard the rumors that Apple has been testing MacBooks with ARM processors as far back as 2011, and it was also in 2012 that there were rumors that Apple could be thinking about making the move from Intel to ARM, and now according to a report from French website, MacBidouille, they are echoing those sentiments by claiming that Apple is testing new Mac prototypes running on 4-8 64-bit ARM quad-core processors.

Their source has revealed to them that these prototypes are very far along in development. One of the models is a 13-inch notebook which could feature a new keyboard design as well as a large-format Magic Trackpad. Their sources also claim that Apple could even be primed for an announcement but are reportedly hesitant to make the move, although we can see why, especially with Windows RT being a prime example of an ARM-based desktop operating system.

It has been suggested in the past that Apple could release ARM-based computers if they wanted, but there are several things to consider, one of which is whether Apple could keep up with Intel’s roadmap. After all, Apple does make other products, compared to Intel whose business is pretty much all about chips. We reckon there could also be a question about compatible apps. As it stands, not all software applications out there play nicely with OS X, so imagine limiting it even further by asking developers to create an ARM-compatible app as well.

In any case do take it with a grain of salt for now, but what do you guys think? Should Apple release an ARM-based computer? And more importantly, is that something you would consider purchasing?
