Nexus 6 Might Be A No-Go [Rumor]

google-nexus-5-red-009There have been talks that a Google Nexus 6 handset could be released this year. There have also been talks about Google launching the Android Silver program which would effectively end the Nexus series of smartphones, although some speculate that the Nexus 6 could be the last handset in the Nexus-lineup.

However according to a recent post by @evleaks, it looks like there might not be a Nexus 6 after all. Given @evleaks’ track record of posting reliable rumors and leaks, there is a good chance that this particular rumor could be true. @evleaks follows up with another post that reads, “Don’t worry, there’s a silver lining to this cloud…” Presumably he’s alluding to the Android Silver program.

For those unfamiliar with the Android Silver program, it’s basically Google’s way to put an end to Android fragmentation, or at least try to curb the majority of it. This will be done by encouraging OEMs to create devices with as little non-Google apps as possible, thus creating a more-or-less stock experience. Devices that have been Silver Certified will receive updates promptly, much like Nexus devices.

The program will also only allow five high-end models at a time, which we guess is pretty good since that means users will have more options to choose from, versus the Nexus handset which only has one model to choose from every year. Earlier rumors suggested that Google will be kicking off Android Silver next year, but if the Nexus 6 rumors are to be believed, perhaps we will learn more about the program at Google I/O next month.
