There is some understandable apprehension when it comes to buying used cars. After all you could end up buying a lemon, but Tesla is hoping to take away your fears by introducing a Certified Previously Owned program for Tesla Model S vehicles in the future. While there are places you can find used Tesla cars, like Craigslist, for example, this certification from Tesla will ensure that what you are buying is the real deal.
According to a report from Automotive News (paywall), it has been suggested that by offering certified used cars, it would essentially be the ace up Tesla’s CEO’s sleeve. This will also capitalize on how leased cars tend to be returned slightly used and all dealers have to do is to get it tuned up and polished and sell it back to buyers who don’t mind driving around a used vehicle.
For example right now a new Tesla Model S could cost customers anywhere between $70,000-$100,000, meaning that for the most part, it is out of reach to the average consumer who might not be able to justify such an expensive purchase. However by offering a CPO, it will open the door to a wider variety of customers.
Tesla’s VP of communications Simon Sproule has since confirmed the company’s plans, stating that with it, they expect to be able to compete with the likes of luxury vehicle manufacturers like Audi, Bentley, BMW, Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz, Range Rover, and so on. So what do you guys think? Would a CPO Tesla Model S at a cheaper price be tempting?
