meth-drone

Drones are increasingly becoming mainstream. A decade or so back many people would have been under the impression that drones are only used for military operations. While that stands true to this day many companies are now exploring other applications, Amazon for example wants to deliver packages via drones, while news organizations want to use them for reporting. Drones are also being used for illegal purposes because that became apparent when a meth laden drone crashed near the U.S.-Mexico border earlier this week.

As per media reports the drone was carrying over six pounds of crystal meth in six packages. It fell out from the sky and crashed into the parking lot of a supermarket in Tijuana, near the San Ysidro Port of Entry, around 10pm. The crashed drone was reported to the Tijuana police by an anonymous citizen.

Drug smugglers have used a variety of methods to move drugs across the border but Tijuana police reports that this is the first time it has seen smugglers make use of drones to smuggle drugs over the San Ysidro Port of Entry.

Officials are currently investigating the matter. It is not known for how long these drone drug smuggling operations have been ongoing, or whether this was a first attempt that didn’t quite go as planned.
