It has been a very long time since the last major release of Office for Mac, almost five years, but Microsoft aims to fix that this year. The company today released Office 2016 Mac preview which gives us a glimpse at what the company has been working on. A final version of Office 2016 for Mac is expected to arrive later this year. The new Office apps for Mac offer Retina Display support, full screen view and even novelties like scroll bounce.

Office 2016 for Mac brings a much needed user interface update to Microsoft’s productivity apps. Word is just as powerful as it has always been, and features like threaded comments make it much easier to collaborate with a team on a document.

Charts, graphs, data entry enhancements and keyboard shortcuts make their way to Excel. Support for Excel 2013 (for Windows) functions is also present.

PowerPoint gets a new Presenter View, which Microsoft calls “mission control for your presentation,” and promises improvements that help users build presentations faster.

Microsoft recently released a new Outlook for Mac app which is part of this preview suite. It brings push mail support, improved conversation view as well as a new message preview which displays the first sentence of an email just below the subject line so users can quickly decide whether they want to read the entire email to come back to it later.

OneNote is also included in this free preview, features include Optical Character Recognition, a search engine to track tags, indexing for typed notes and more.

Office 2016 for Mac isn’t final. Microsoft is still working on the productivity suite so expect more changes to be made and more features to be added before the final version is released later this year. Office 2016 for Mac preview is available as a free download, no Office 365 subscription required.
