Fancy purchasing an unlocked version of HTC’s latest flagship smartphone? Well now you can, and that too directly from the company itself. HTC has begun selling the unlocked version of the HTC One M9, the smartphone that it unveiled earlier this month at the Mobile World Congress 2015 in Barcelona. All major carriers in the United States will also be offering the device on contract as well as their equipment installment plans.

Do keep in mind that this is the unlocked version and not the developer edition. The difference between these two is that the latter has an unlocked bootloader from the get go, which makes it a much more feasible option for developers.

There are obvious advantages of purchasing an unlocked unit. First off you’re not tied to any carrier. Moreover the unit can work with almost every GSM and LTE carrier around the world.

This privilege does come at a price though. Anyone willing to purchase an unlocked HTC One M9 directly from the company will have to pay $649 up front.

HTC is selling the device in both gunmetal gray and two-tone silver/gold colors. The company will also sell an all gold version of the unlocked model but so far it has not appeared on HTC’s online store. According to the company it will ship these units in 3-8 business days if an order is placed now.
