Owning a social network account is fine and dandy, but surely like many other things in life, one ought to make the provision for the time when you are about to call it quits in this life? Who else is going to be around to manage your Facebook page for instance? We did report a couple of days before Valentine’s this year that one will be able to ask folks to manage one’s Facebook page once we have passed away, but apparently, Louise Palmer’s 19-year old daughter, Becky, has passed away and her Facebook account is not all that it is supposed to be after her passing. What do we mean by that?
It seems that Louise Palmer does have permission fro her daughter to log into her Facebook account after her death – and prior, too, in order to exchange messages with Becky’s friends. Unfortunately, she was locked from Becky’s Facebook account out one day after Becky’s account was ‘memorialized’.
Louise did write to Facebook, explaining the rather tragic circumstances surrounding Becky’s death and did share how she wanted to read the private messages on her daughter’s page as well as to help keep things nice and tidy, but the reply was rather cold and standard as seen below.
Hi Louise, We are very sorry to hear about your loss. Per our policy for deceased users, we have memorialized this account. This sets the account’s privacy so that only already confirmed friends can see the profile or locate it in Search. The Wall will remain, so friends and family can leave posts in remembrance. Unfortunately, for privacy reasons, we cannot make changes to the profile or provide login information for the account. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Please let me know if you have any further questions. Thanks for contacting Facebook.
Louise did not stop there, and wrote to Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, although she failed to receive a reply. Pretty sad case, don’t you think so?
