vw-californiaThere is this thing about going retro, and I am quite sure that a fair number of people out there do have fond memories of the classic VW camper van that was quite popular back in the 1950s, thanks to the idea of a compact, affordable home with wheels. It looks like Volkswagen has not forgotten about their past, and has just unveiled the spanking new California variant of the Transporter T6.

The California Ocean is no shoestring ride – heck, it even comes with a full kitchen, now how about that? You will be able to choose from a couple of VW California models – where one of them would be the “Ocean” and the other is the “Beach”. The California can sleep up to four people, and in terms of driving experience, you will be able to enjoy it a whole lot more than its past iteration, thanks to updated engineering and cautious modernization.

The Ocean model boasts of an electrohydraulic pop-up roof as well as dimmable LED lighting in the roof and tailgate, a 42-liter (11 gal) fridge, a twin-burner stove, and a stainless steel sink. Heck, the German automaker has also thrown in a combination cup, ashtray and towel holder. Safety features include a Driver Alert System which is capable of figuring out unusual steering patterns that might point to driver fatigue, before it advises the driver to take a break, whereas Brake Assist will apply full braking pressure in emergencies; and Automatic Post-Collision Braking that activates the brakes during an accident so that there will be no secondary collisions. No word on pricing details just yet, but that is tipped to come in due time.
