icloud sign-in

The Greek financial crisis has been making headlines over the past few weeks and while the country continues to negotiate with its creditors for another bailout, it has imposed capital controls to prevent significant cash outflow to protect against an even more drastic financial collapse. Capital controls mean that users in Greece are not able to pay monthly subscription fees for online services, and while Apple had previously said that paid iCloud users would be downgraded if they didn’t pay, it has extended an olive branch to users in Greece.

The company has sent an email to users in Greece informing them that it will not attempt to charge their card on file until after 30 days have passed since that particular iCloud account’s renewal date.

Apple has effectively given paid iCloud users in Greece a month’s worth of free service but it’s going to be one-time thing. Apple warns users that once those 30 days are up they will have to reduce their reliance on increased iCloud storage, which basically means they will be downgraded to the free tier.

All users get 5GB of iCloud storage for free, plans start at $0.99 per month for 20GB and go up to 1TB. Hopefully it won’t take too long for Greece’s fate to be known, once these capital controls are lifted people can go back to making payments online and use their preferred online services.
