Instagram has become synonymous with square pictures, ever since it first arrived on the scene and even after its acquisition by Facebook, Instagram has remained loyal to square photos so much so that it didn’t even allow portraits or landscape formats. That changes today. Instagram has confirmed that in addition to square photos users can now share photos in both landscape and portrait orientation, there’s more, this change also applies to videos shared on Instagram.

It hasn’t lost love for the square format, “Square format has been and always will be part of who we are,” Instagram says adding that it’s more important that the visual story its users want to tell come first and that’s why it’s making it much more easier for them now to share photos and videos just the way they want to.

Choosing between the different formats is very easy, just tap on the format icon when choosing a photo or video to upload so that the orientation can be adjusted to portrait or landscape from square.

Once the photo or video is shared the full-size version will appear to all followers in a “beautiful, natural way.” To ensure that users’ profile grid remains clean posts in these orientations will appear as center-cropped square.

The updated Instagram app, version 7.5, is now available for download on iOS and Android through the App Store and Google Play Store.
